Bring back The Typewriter
My connection on the Internet broke down today -- again.
I am nowhere near an expert when it comes to repairing my personal computer. I leave that job to Jeff, one of my two roommates, who is the house expert and who can fix anything electronic.
Now I realize the Internet is a great boon to humanity. The people living in the Caribbean on the islands where I once worked -- St. Kitts, Nevis and St. Maarten -- think the Internet is a gift to mankind and they are correct.
The islanders use their computers to set up businesses, make friends, and earn money in a variety of ways. The Internet supplies them with the knowledge that mankind has been able to accumulate over the centuries between wars and rumors of wars.
But -- and this is a big but -- computers are not perfect.
In the early days of the Internet I remember how a bolt of lightning on a clear day could instantly wipe out all the words of a story I had been writing. It was not saved. That technology had not yet been worked out, so I would have to go back to the drawing board and do everything over.
It was a pain I had to learn to live with.
I use my computer for so many things. When I want to brush up on my strategy for poker, horse racing, or controlling my throws at a dice table, I do a simple search and the knowledge appears instantly on the screen. You can't beat that kind of service.
I write my stories for these websites on my computer. In the old days when I used my Remington typewriter, I would sometimes struggle for a lead and throw away sheet after sheet of paper until I came up with the proper words.
Early in my college days, I came across a magazine article that stated Ernest Hemingway, my hero, wrote his books standing up. He claimed it kept the oxygen flowing properly to his brain and helped him think. I tried that a few times but it tired me and I gave it up.
I loved using a typewriter to create my stories. There was a rhythm and flow of words on a typewriter that just don't exist on a computer.
Progress is wonderful, but it does have its limitations. Today I can take my PC with me wherever I go. I can instantly pull up whatever information I need for whatever subject that interests me.
The first typewriter I ever used belonged to a neighbor named Mary. I was 15 and my father had built our family a house on Sutersville Hill in Western Pennsylvania.
Mary was a sweet young woman who lived in the house next to ours. When she learned I was an aspiring author, she insisted I use her typewriter to compose my stories. I will never forget her generosity. I borrowed her typewriter and didn't return it until the summer ended and I returned to school where typewriters were available.
I used a typewriter to cover breaking news stories for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner for four glorious years. I covered murders, earthquakes, criminal trials, fires and plane crashes. It was heady stuff for a young journalist and my typewriter never let me down.
But when the Internet breaks down through overuse by the people of the world or for whatever reason, I find myself secretly wishing that the world would bring back the typewriter. It will never happen, of course. The typewriter belongs to the ages. But it's a nice thought.

The Night Nevada Went Black
You gotta say one thing for human nature: it wins every time.
Take prohibition. America's political leaders put their pointed heads together and decided to yield to the pressure of women across the country who wanted to stop their husbands, sons and uncles from drinking, so they passed legislation that prohibited alcohol from being sold.
That, of course, opened the floodgates for people like Al Capone and Dutch Schultz to load up their liquor trucks and warehouses with illegal booze and make a fortune in the process.
Prohibition didn't last very long. But during its heyday, there were murders, hijackings, bribery of law enforcement officers and prosecutors and enough corruption of public officials to keep the presses rolling and sell millions of newspapers.
Eventually and inevitably, human nature triumphed and the politicians retreated and gave the public what it wanted -- the right to purchase and drink alcohol.
Something similar to prohibition occurred in Nevada in 1910. By the end of the 19th century, political leaders in nearly every Western state or territory had passed laws prohibiting gambling. Only one state -- Nevada -- permitted gambling.
Nevadans have always prided themselves on being different. They resisted the pressures of the anti-gambling crowd as long as they could, but it finally caught up to them. In 1909 with great reluctance, the Nevada legislature joined the crowd and passed a law making it illegal to gamble in the Silver State.
The law stunned the citizens of Nevada. It went into effect on Oct. 1, 1910.
On Sept. 30, all the casinos and card rooms in Nevada were filled to capacity. Even people who had never gambled crowded into the dens of iniquity to see what a gambling establishment was all about. They drank, smoke, and bet their money on spinning wheels, cards, dice and green felt tables operated by smiling men with mustaches.
The games were so crowded you had to stand in line to make a wager. It was bedlam and the casino owners made more money on that final day of legal gambling than they would have made in a week of normal operations.
On Oct. 1, the lights went out in all the casinos. Nevada went black.
Well, sort of. The gambling went underground. There were people who knew where the illegal games were operating and word got around fast. All you had to do was ask and somebody would give you the correct information and directions on where to go.
The illegal games continued for the next two decades. Finally, tired of losing all those millions of tax dollars they would have collected, the state legislators passed laws that once again made it legal to gamble in Nevada. And it's been that way ever since.
When it Rains it Pours
The month of April is a great month for one of our LCB, 'Hero Members!'' She had to make several withdrawals this month to collect her winnings. So, there was no doubt that she was our April's first, 'Biggest Weekly Winner!"
Krystalkitty, aka, kathy.anderson had some of us doing a double take when she recently, posted screenshots on the forum. The first screenshot was a wonderful surprise to us and undoubtedly to kathy too! She was playing RTG's, Nova 7s and hit the bonus round.
At the end of the bonus, the following statement appeared, 'FEATURE COMPLETE, you've won $3,317.75!" This was great, but it was just the beginning! Her next win was much smaller, $413.76, also on Nova 7 and soon after, our winner decided to cashout, leaving some playing cash behind.
The following day, we were surprised to see her post another screenshot. Along with the screenshot she said, "Withdrew a nice amount of money, and get some to play with and then got this:" A nice win from the bonus feature of 'Shark School' for $1,392.88!
The next screenshot our hot spinner posted, left us almost speechless. It was a single line winner, on a $5 spin! The win totaled $3,365.25 on Ronin! Now, you'd think this was time to count our blessings or count our winnings, but she continued to spin. When she hit the single line win on Ronin, she said, "Guess you just never know."
Believe it or not, our Hero Member continued to spin and several hours later, posted another screenshot. This one was from Ricky Valens, La Bamba. This was a $7.50 single spin with a reward of $2,250.00.
Kathy was not ready to call it quits and I guess she knew best. On April 1st, she posted her final screenshot from the RTG game, Fantasy Mission Force! The win was on one of the bonus features an ended in wins totaling, $1,207.75. After the screenshot, the winner posted, "Here is another great screenshot on the new game! I bet I got over 100 free spins. It's called the Kaboom feature. Like it a lot:)"
Wow, over 100 spins, sounds like a great game!
We asked Ms Anderson how much she cashed out and she replied " I never kiss and tell; The casino and I are the only ones who know what I withdraw:)"
This is the second time our member was playing at Grande Vegas Casino when she was winning, so we asked her if this was her favorite casino and she replied, "Is Grande Vegas my favorite? At this time I would have to say YES! RTG are for sure my fav Platform."
Even though we don't know exactly how much our big winner cashed out. We can say for sure that the amount was big! Did she pick all the right games? Were all the games, the right games to play that day? We may never know! In our member's case, there is only one thing that we can say for sure. When it rains it pours!
Congratulations girl, great job!

UPayCard Now Supports Ripple
Since its inception in 2013, UPayCard has achieved quite a lot during its short existence so far. With security being its utmost priority and online and prepaid services available to business and personal users, this increasingly popular banking system is taking on the main hot topic of today's finance: cryptocurrency. The innovation and revolutionary spirit is their forte, and it gladdens us that this cutting-edge UK company continues to blaze the trail for everyone else in the business.
Last month, we reported on their inclusion of Litecoin that now has their full buying and selling support. Previously, the cryptocurrency wave with UpayCard was led by Bitcoin and Ethereum, and now another rising star in the crypto world has entered their domain: Ripple!
Now you can open your UpayCarrd crypto wallet (totally free of charge!) and load it with Ripple (XRP), which is a payment protocol released in 2012 and based on a shared and public database or ledger. Ripple is already used by such finance companies as uniCredit and Santander and its reputation is on the steady increase in the banks' and payment networks' circles, especially since Ripple Labs focused on penetrating the banking market since 2014.
In its core, Ripple is an open-source protocol and is described by its creators as a “basic infrastructure technology for interbank transactions – a neutral utility for financial institutions and systems.” As the coin's Wiki page explains: “users make payments between each other by using cryptographically signed transactions denominated in either fiat currencies or Ripple's internal currency (XRP).”
It's great to see one such mass-used system as UpayCard getting with the program and providing technical support for cryptocurrencies – we hope more payment methods and banking systems follow their lead.

Wild Woman of The West
On a summer day in 1852, a dust-covered stagecoach from San Francisco came to a screeching halt in Nevada City, CA. There was only one passenger aboard -- an attractive well-dressed young woman wearing a stylish hat.
Single women were a scarcity in the early days of the wild west. Her arrival drew curious and even lustful glances from the cowboys, gold prospectors, gamblers and even clergymen who were lucky enough to see the arrival of Eleanore Dumont.
She was dressed a little flamboyantly with jewelry and a low-cut gown. But it was evident to those who saw her that she was not a lady of the evening as prostitutes were called. And the men were also pleased that she was not a school teacher or social worker who frowned on whiskey and gambling, both of which were prominent in Nevada City.
Miss Dumont had a delightful French accent as well as an attractive downy fuzz on her upper lip. One of the men removed his hat and escorted her from the stagecoach. He followed her like an obedient puppy dog to a hotel a block away from where she registered herself.
The eligible males and a few who were not eligible took great interest in Eleanore Dumont. They noted she smoked cigarettes that she rolled herself and drank fine wine. She carried herself like a lady and appeared to be chaste. She did not go out of her way to attract men, but neither did she drive them away.
She was a gambler -- one of the best -- and she opened a game that quickly grew into one of the most respected poker games in town.
California was still reeling from the economic effects of the gold strike. There were many prospectors in Nevada City whose pockets were heavy with gold. In her attractive, almost virginal style, Dumont managed to relieve them of much of the weight of the heavy precious metal.
At first, the men who played in her game did it out of curiosity. But the curiosity grew into admiration. In order to play at her poker table, she insisted that the men wear jackets, refrain from profanity, and not engage in fisticuffs or other violence. She also ordered them to remove their hats. The popularity of her gambling enterprise literally exploded, forcing her to move to a larger facility.
She hired dealers and other assistants and became wealthy. After several years, the economic prosperity of Virginia City began slowing down and Dumont bid a sad adieu to the town. She moved to other places to run gambling games -- Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and South Dakota. She was successful everywhere she traveled.
Then age caught up with her and she began to lose her beauty. By the time she was 40, she had put on pounds and the wispy downy hairs on her upper lip had turned into a mustache. She had switched her drinking from wine to whiskey. While she made some of her money gambling, she made even more of it by going to bed with her customers who had started calling her Madame Moustache.
She moved to Fort Benton, Montana and opened a gambling saloon and brothel in a two-story building. The place had no touch of elegance. It was rundown with a dozen small rooms on the second floor.
A steamboat man who had heard of Madame Moustache came to the place because he wanted to play against her. By then Dumont was considerably overweight and her moustache was quite pronounced. He told her he either wanted to lose his $200 to her or use it to win a considerable amount of money.
She smiled and they began playing. She cleaned him out.
As he rose to leave, she signaled to one of her employees and insisted the man have a special drink on the house. It was a glass of milk. He returned to his steamship with nothing but memories.
Elaine Dumont's life ended tragically. She moved to Bodie, CA., set up a gambling house, and in 1879 decided she had had enough of life..She wandered out of town and shot herself to death.

Institutional Investors Rekindle Their Love For Bitcoin
It's not off-base to talk about clouds and silver linings when discussing and contemplating Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. Since we're long into spring of 2018 already, it's safe to say that the phenomenal year that was 2017 will not be repeated this time. The tumble Bitcoin took in the first quarter was just too much, but now it seems as if there is something good coming out of its supposed demise.
Despite the fact that Bitcoin has dropped heavily – very heavily, as much as by 70% since its peak value of almost $20,000 in December 2017 – it has actually started to gain new momentum in terms of interest from institutional investors who are believing in Bitcoin again. For the first time in months, “serious money is entering the market” - those are the words of Jeffrey Van de Leemput, Cryptocampus analyst. “A couple days ago I helped set up a 200k BTC transaction for Chinese buyers…Soros, etc., are coming in, we will now see the start of the real bubble,” he added.
As the cryptocurrency is currently trading for $8300 per coin, these events are perfectly in line with what was already predicted by Smart Valor's chief executive officer, Olga Feldmeier, who said: “A strong break above the $8,000 USD area is having the potential to comprise the ignition for the next bull phase, for which a lot of investors were waiting for a long time and will be happy to support now.”
Ari Paul, chief investment officer of BlockTower Capital is not as surprised, as he already commented that this institutional investment is inevitable for cryptocurrencies. He commented, “Even if they never believe in it, as an asset class, they’re smart enough to recognize the alpha opportunity.”
Saxo Bank analyst Jacob Pouncey is of the opinion that legacy markets uncertainties are giving an edge to the rebirth of Bitcoin demand and other crypto assets that are in no correlation with mainstream financial markets, adding, “If there is a significant pullback in the equity markets, there will be an inflow of money into uncorrelated assets, or assets that lie outside the reach of the traditional financial system in which cryptocurrencies are a potential alternative. The inflow of institutional capital to the cryptocurrency market, due to the increase in regulation and investor protection, could lead cryptocurrencies to a positive quarter.”
Managing director and global head of equity products and alternative investments at CME Group, Tim McCourt confirms that trading volume is steadily increasing each month!
Could this be it, the moment all of Bitcoin enthusiasts were hoping for (and in likelihood praying for)? Do you believe this will once again put the cryptocurrency and Bitcoin wheels in turbo motion? Have your say in the comments below…

Hell Club Introduces Oh Hell Stackpot™
There’s something new and exciting on the horizon, and it’s going down in the popular online card room dedicated to the game, Oh Hell. Players can soon look forward to the launch of an enticing real-money format, which is being called, Oh Hell Stackpot™, on April 22nd at 6:00pm CET. To celebrate the event, the room is hosting a Launch Party Freeroll, giving players a chance to get their hands on €1,000! There will also be a HellTicket giveaway to the top 20 players. Tickets are worth €22 and may be used to enter the first Weekly Real Money HellTournament, kicking off at 8pm on the 22nd.
Hell Club founder, Simon Ry, commented “Hell Club is thrilled to be launching its latest online card game innovation, Oh Hell Stackpot™. We believe that this game has the potential to be the next big thing after Poker, if it finds the right target group.”
Ry went on to add, “In Oh Hell, there is no such thing as a bad hand. Regardless of your cards, you can still make plays so long as you can predict the behavior of your opponents. The game is played worldwide, and usually for fun. The Stackpot™ model has taken out some of the flaws with Oh Hell and replaced it with a better system. It is no longer possible to zero-bid your way to victory, and it doesn't require you to play 20+ rounds to participate, if you don't have time."
"Most other gambling games don't make much sense if you take away the money. They're often boring or even pointless. Introducing the betting aspect to a game that is fun to play without money will hopefully only enhance the experience. On Hell Club, players can opt to play for fun or for cash. We believe both formats will be hugely popular, and look forward to receiving feedback from players," he finished.
For those who have not yet played the game which inspired the card room, it relies on players guessing how many tricks they can take with the hand they have been dealt. The number changes for each round and is dependent on the pattern.
The latest Stackpot™ addition is an original concept and can be applied to round-based games. There is no set number of winners and any cash that isn’t won will accumulate in one massive jackpot and is ultimately used to increase winnings for succeeding bets. It is organized in the form of cash games, Sit&Gos and tournaments, with the table currency being in Hellcoins.

Concerns About Heading to the Moon? Ask the Slotsmoon Rep
Slotsmoon is newer on your radar, having debuted in 2017. If you haven’t checked it out just yet, you can read our full review for more details or keep reading right here… One thing is for sure; players will be over the moon with the level of slot offerings available here (see what I did there?).
The casino is equipped with a mega variety of reel games, powered by a multi-software platform that includes classics along with loads of today’s favorites from suppliers like NextGen, Play’n GO and Microgaming. Whether you prefer classic or modern, there’s plenty of flash-based titles to choose from. While these are certainly the main attraction, they’re not all that makes up this casino’s library. It’s rounded out with table game and video poker variants, in addition to themed scratch cards.
What does every online casino need? A loyalty program. Members can collect points each time they place real money wagers, which can be converted to real cash. Among the benefits to enjoy include free play opportunities, birthday bonuses, cashback and more.
Licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, the site makes player privacy and fairness a primary concern, having acquired an exclusive certificate. In a further effort to keep players in good graces, a representative from the casino has also signed on to the LCB forum as direct casino support. Rep, Anders, said hello on Friday, the 13th, with a clever introduction: “Ever wondered how it would be to go to the moon? We have done our best in order to make a similar representation at our casino. We want you to experience a new online casino where we take you to the moon and back!”
“Our daily promotions once registered, our VIP features, support channels and all the things you need to have for one of your best time playing at a casino... and you are more then welcome to join,” he continued.
Ready to address any and all needs regarding your player experience, he can be contacted via the designated user profile page.
Blue Highways
One of America's most popular television series was 'Route 66,' starring Marvin Milner and George Maharis as two restless young men who traveled across the country in a blue Corvette.
The weekly shows were shot on location and were immensely popular to people of all ages. 'Route 66' was created in 1960 and ran for four seasons.
My brother Legs and I were so inspired by the series that we decided to emulate the two lead characters. We couldn't afford a Corvette, but we dusted off an old Plymouth that needed a new set of tires and set off for Phoenix, AZ. in search of fame, fortune and adventure.
Legs wanted to be a professional singer. I wanted to be a writer.
The Plymouth made it as far as Tucson before the engine expired on us. Like a couple of rodeo cowboys with a dead horse, we unloaded our gear and took a Greyhound Bus to Phoenix.
I quickly found a reporting job on a newspaper and Legs went to work for a construction company painting houses. While our hometown of Sutersville, PA. was being battered by freezing snowstorms, we basked in 80-degree weather under Arizona's blue skies and took daily swims in the pool at a motel on Van Buren Street where we were staying.
There was a local television show called 'Lou King's Rangers' that caught my interest. It was hosted by a guy in a cowboy outfit who called himself Lou King -- his name was really Lou Klein and he was from New Kensington, PA. He featured local talent on his show. Two of his regular performers were Wayne and Jerry Newton.
In the 1960s, Wayne Newton didn't wear a tuxedo. He wore buckskins. He had the same high-pitched voice that carried him to stardom after Jackie Gleason discovered him and signed him to a contract to appear on his TV show.
I thought 'Lou King's Rangers' would be a perfect place to showcase my brother. I approached King, he gave Legs and his new guitar-playing partner Dave Pritchett an audition, and booked them for an appearance on his show.
I don't want to sound immodest, but people who have heard my brother and Wayne Newton sing agree that my brother's voice is superior to Wayne's. If Gleason had heard Legs sing instead of Wayne Newton, who knows what the outcome might have been?
One morning a letter addressed to me arrived in the mail. It was from the U.S. government. I had been drafted by the Army and was ordered to report to Ft. Ord, CA. for basic training.
We had bought another car and Legs decided he had had enough of Arizona. He drove back to Pennsylvania, took a job at the steel mill where our father worked and became a gospel singer.
He became part of a group called the Steel City Quartet. They performed in churches, fire halls and other meeting places singing southern style gospel music throughout the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
While Legs was performing with the quartet, I was learning how to be a newspaper reporter and writing for magazines. I also became a poker player and horse handicapper at Turf Paradise, a race track in Phoenix.
Legs and his quartet made several records that were well received by the public. One of the albums was a remake of the Platters' top records with Christian lyrics -- songs like 'Only You,' 'Harbor Lights' and 'The Great Pretender.' That album has sold several thousand copies and is still selling. He even was honored by being named to the Gospel Hall of Fame.
My brother told me this week that his singing career is near an end. After more than 50 years of singing gospel music, he plans to retire.
He said the quartet members have let age catch up to them and it's time the quartet was disbanded. That will be sad news for their thousands of fans. I tried to talk him into doing a farewell concert tour. He is considering it but doesn't know if the other quartet members will agree to it.
I asked him what he plans to do with his time if he isn't singing. He's a golfer and loves to play the slot machines at The Meadows, a harness racetrack and casino in Washington, PA., and I suspect he will continue with those activities.
Life is a long blue highway but all roads eventually come to an end. Hang in there, brother. You have been on an incredible journey.

80 Pounds of Silver
'Dear Geno,' a member writes. 'My girl friend and I live in a small town in Texas. It;s b-o-r-i-n-g. Nothing exciting ever happens around here. We are both high school graduates and we are thinking of moving to Las Vegas and getting a job in a casino. What do you think of our plans?' Deborah S., Tyler, Texas.
It must be wonderful to be young and full of dreams.
Like Deborah and her friend, I grew up in a small town and I agree things were boring. I even went to work for a gambling casino in Laughlin, NV. I was a change attendant for Don Laughlin's Riverside Casino.
Back in those days you didn't win slips of paper that you could exchange for money at the cashier's cage. When you won money from a slot machine, you collected silver dollars, quarters, half dollars, dimes and nickels.
To keep the customers supplied with cash, casino owners hired change attendants who walked around the casino wearing a vest that carried coins to make change. The coins in my vest weighed about 80 pounds and I can assure you that is a lot of weight to be carrying around for eight hours, five days a week.
After seven days on the job, my feet hurt so bad I could barely get out of bed. I liked Don Laughlin. He was a self-made millionaire and he was popular with his employees. But I staggered out of bed, dressed, went to his office and resigned.
'What's the matter?,' Laughlin said, smiling. 'This casino life too exciting for you?' He understood, paid me my wages, and we remained friends.
Working for a casino isn't a bad idea for Deborah and her friend. There are many good paying jobs in a casino and if a person is not addicted to gambling, it could be a good career choice. Try it for six months or a year. It just might work for you.
Laughlin grew up in a small town in the midwest. He was an enterprising youngster who went into the slot machine business when he was still in high school. He was earning about $500 a week buying and selling slot machines to hunting lodges in his geographic area when his principal found out about his business.
The principal called him into his office and issued an ultimatum: either give up the slot machine business or leave the school. Since Laughlin was earning more than twice what the principal was being paid, he dropped out of school.
Laughlin ran a small casino in Las Vegas before he decided to turn Laughlin into a casino resort community. He bought a run down motel, installed a dozen slot machines and two gambling tables, and the Riverside was born.
Over the years, Laughlin expanded the number of rooms and built an airport across the Colorado River in Bullhead City, AZ. When the State of Nevada dragged its feet in constructing a bridge over the Colorado, Laughlin dismissed them and built the bridge at his own expense. His efforts paid off handsomely.
Now in his late 80s, Laughlin lives in a penthouse suite in the Riverside. He drives expensive cars, owns an extensive antique car collection that he keeps in Laughlin, and flies a helicopter.
I still smile when I remember the story of the bus boy who worked for the Riverside. One night after work he got drunk and stole one of Laughlin's Cadillacs. He planned to run off to Mexico with a cute cocktail waitress he had met.
When he learned of the theft, Laughlin was outraged. He called the Sheriff's Department and filed a complaint. He told the deputies he wanted his Cadillac back even if they had to shoot the offending bus boy to get it.
Deputies intercepted the stolen car and arrested the bus boy. Laughlin ended up forgiving him and even hired him back after he was released from jail.
I haven't been to Laughlin for a while but I love the area. There's a ghost town in Arizona called Oatman that lies in the scenic mountains just north of Bullhead City. It's about 23 miles from Laughlin and it's definitely worth a visit.
Oatman is populated with miners, retirees, poker players and eccentric folks who enjoy their lifestyle. The streets are filled with wandering wild burros that came from the prospectors who mined silver and gold in the area. You can feed them, but don't try to ride them. They're wild and you could end up with some serious injuries.
